The Twin City Thunderbirds are offering internship and volunteer opportunities for the 2026-2027 season for college students, recent graduates, and individuals looking to gain hands-on experience in professional sports.
Thunderbirds interns and volunteers have the opportunity to learn what goes into operating a professional hockey franchise, from game-day entertainment and fan engagement to live broadcast production, media projects, and behind-the-scenes event execution. Our staff works closely with each participant to provide meaningful experience while also adapting to the expectations, requirements, or credit-hour needs of a college internship program.
Applications for the 2026-2027 season are currently open. The length, schedule, and scope of each internship may vary based on the needs of the organization and the availability of the applicant.
Game Day Operations Internship
The Twin City Thunderbirds are seeking Game Day Operations interns to assist with the execution of home games during the 2026-2027 season.
Game Day Operations interns play an important role in creating an energetic, organized, and fan-friendly atmosphere at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds Arena. Interns will assist with promotions, fan engagement, game presentation, volunteer coordination, and the overall flow of the game-night experience.
Interns are expected to be available for Thunderbirds home games throughout the season. The Thunderbirds play 28 regular-season home games, and flexibility may be considered when scheduling conflicts arise.
Responsibilities May Include
- Assisting with the planning and execution of game-day operations
- Supporting in-game promotions, contests, and fan-engagement activities
- Coordinating game-day volunteers and promotional teams
- Assisting with the execution of game scripts and timing
- Helping maintain an organized game-day flow for fans, staff, and participants
- Supporting the development and execution of game-day policies and procedures
- Providing general event support before, during, and after home games

Broadcast Production Internship
The Twin City Thunderbirds are seeking Broadcast Production interns to assist with live game broadcasts and media production during the 2026-2027 season.
Broadcast Production interns will gain hands-on experience in live sports production while contributing to Thunderbirds home broadcasts, video content, and digital media projects. This internship is ideal for students or individuals interested in sports broadcasting, live production, video editing, camera operation, graphics, and media content creation.
Interns will assist with game-day broadcasts for all 28 regular-season home games, while also supporting additional team media and video projects throughout the season.
Responsibilities May Include
- Operating live broadcast cameras during home games
- Assisting with live graphics and broadcast presentation
- Supporting setup, teardown, and organization of broadcast equipment
- Editing highlights and short-form video content
- Filming and editing team media projects
- Assisting with production elements for digital platforms
- Supporting broadcast preparation and game-day production workflows
Preferred Skills & Experience
- Basic knowledge of sports broadcasting or live production
- Hockey knowledge is preferred, but not required
- Familiarity with cameras, streaming software, graphics packages, and video editing software
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work in a fast-paced game-day environment
- Interest in sports media, broadcasting, video production, or digital content
