Internships

The Carolina Thunderbirds are offering a variety of internship and volunteer positions for the 2021-2022 season, seeking college students and those wanting to gain experience.

The positions listed below will detail the duties of the intern as well as the Thunderbirds staff member that should be contacted with a resume and cover letter. This page will be updated as the off season progresses so applicants are encouraged to check back frequently.  Applications for internships are currently open and the length and scope of internships will be adjusted according to the intern's needs. 

Thunderbird interns will have the opportunity to experience the full spectrum of operating a hockey team and the Thunderbirds staff can adjust to the expectations or requirements of a school's internship program. 


Broadcast PRODUCTION  

The Carolina Thunderbirds are seeking interns to assist in media production work ahead of the 2021-2022 season. Interns will assist in game day broadcasts for all (32) home games, including camera and graphics work. Interns will also assist on various media and video projects during the season. On-air opportunities can be made available given the proper skillset. This is an unpaid internship.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Live camera operation for home game days
  • Editing of highlights for local news and website
  • Filming/editing for team media projects
  • Some game recap writing
  • Graphic directing for live broadcasts

REQUIREMENTS

Basic knowledge of sports broadcasting, hockey knowledge preferred but not required

Understanding of cameras, broadcast/streaming software, radio broadcast scheduling, graphics packages, editing software and sequence editing.

Interviewing skills preferred but not required.

PREFERRED MAJORS

Film/TV production, Graphic Design, Broadcasting, Communications or other similar majors

SOCIAL MEDIA

Create engaging content for Thunderbirds fans on our various social media channels.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Live updates during home and road games
  • Player interactive pieces
  • Fan interaction at home games
  • Social campaigns
  • Score graphics and more

Ticket sales  

Learn and gain knowledge of the ticket sales process for the Carolina Thunderbirds. 

Internship duties will include:

  • Data entry and filing 
  • Making sales calls to new ticket holders 
  • Gaining knowledge in the ticket process of ticket plans and prices 
  • Getting familiar in work office setting
  • Much more

Gameday operations 

Game Operations Interns are required to all 32 home games. We are flexible when it comes game dates if any circumstances occur. Interns will assist in making game day run smoothly and help with fan engagement. 

Internship duties will include:

  • Planning and executing game operations strategies
  • Coordinating game-day volunteers and ensuring the smooth flow of game scripts
  • Development of game policies
  • Fan engagement
  • Office hours 
  • Assisting with birthday packages

EQUIPMENT management

Gain real-time experience managing equipment and the Thunderbirds locker room.

Internship duties will include:

  • Organization of team equipment
  • Inventory of all locker room items
  • Washing game jerseys, practice jerseys and socks
  • Repair of equipment/jerseys
